The contract system is gaining popularity in educational circles. Under this system, a student contracts with his professor for a particular grade based on the amount of work he believes he can accomplish. This article describes how the basic theories of contracting were applied to an upper division French literature class. It further analyzes the results achieved in terms of the realization of the goals of individualized instruction, fair evaluation, and emphasis on the learning process rather than on the grade.
