The class discussion of reading material in the second year language course need not be restricted to materials provided in the fnhaEtsfragen offered by the average reading anthology. This article suggests several approaches to the development of reading and conversational skills. The methods proposed are: (1) Free paraphrase of the textual material; (2) Free dialogue; (3) Sketches and cartoons. These methods permit the teacher and the student to focus their attention on the development of spontaneous conversational skills and they provide opportunity for vocabulary and grammar exercises which become an integral part of the textual paraphrase.
