An Arizona high school has demonstrated that, with certain limitations, advanced French can be taught on an individual basis within the framework of a standard class period. New forms of activity were devised to replace the traditional lecture oriented class which was used only for supplements such as films and guest speakers. The students then kept their own record of progress in the course according to a predetermined system. Strict controls were nevertheless maintained by the teacher permit. ting him to delegate responsibility to the students as they were ready to accept it. The most serious impedi. ments to individualizing instruction were found to be class load and the preparation and personality of the teacher.
