Thc national decline in the Scholastic Aptitude Test scores in verbal ability over t h e past several years has indicated a need for reiriedial work with vocabulary development. A course in the enlargement of students' English vocabulary through the study of Latin and G r e e k r o o t s and their derivatives has been developed by t h e Department of the Classics dt the University of Illinois. A unique component of t h e class is t h a t it makes use of computer-assisted instruction ds available on t h e P L A T 0 IV system. Enrollment in less than a year has increased frorn t h i r t y - f i v e to over 400, and some s t u d e n t s have improved as much as f o r t y p e r c e n t i l e r a n k s in their verbal a p t i t u d e as ineasured on standardized tests.
