Much of t h e c u r r e n t emphasis on communication t e c h n i q u e s has been r e s e r v e d f o r o r a l work in t h e language, a l t h o u g h many r e s e a r c h e r s and p r a c t i t i o n e r s in second language i n s t r u c t i o n a r e faced with t h e concern of reading acquisition along with t h e acquisition of t h e spoken language. This paper r e l a t e s work on oral communication to reading. For t h i s purpose, communication is defined in t h e i n f o r m a t i o n t h e o r y s e n s e of 'shared information.' The a c t i v i t y d e s c r i b e d a c t i v a t e s t h e reading process by obliging s t u d e n t s to use written information which i s of immediate importance to their task. The technique involves presenting each s t u d e n t w i t h a w r i t t e n c l u e f r o m a mystery story which is p e r t i n e n t to t h e solution of t h e rnystery. Sustained student in t e r a c t i o n is required in that t h e problem cannot be solved without t h e participation and cooperation of all class members. This joint problem-solving endeavor requires students to use both oral and written linguistic skills.
