Isi artikel
The new language program at Loyola University of Chicago is designed to make explicit the place of language study in the liberal arts curriculum. The approach is interdisciplinary, with a trained linguist giving lectures which relate the study of a specific language to the study of the phenomenon of language itself. Since the program is to be completed in two semesters instead of the traditional four, goals have been redefined to emphasize reading as a key to culture and a springboard for discussions of the extended concept of language. The revision of the concept of usable skills allows students to choose among several different options if they wish to continue language study. They may enroll in linguistics courses, literature courses, or courses which improve skills in oral and written expression.
