Experimentation reveals that there are a number of ways to individualize and personalize instruction in the university foreign language class even under conditions of traditional scheduling and large class size. Efforts in this direction have generated enthusiastic response on the part of teachers and students and have served as a stimulus to further experimentation. Techniques such as directed small-group work, field trips, and lively oral presentations give students an opportunity to use the target language in a meaningful way and make the learning experience practical and enjoyable.
