Isi artikel
When not made burdensome through rote memorization, dialogue learning proves an effective tool in teaching conversational skills to lower-level language students. Using an outline of the day's dialogue can assist the student to 'learn' the material without complete memorization. This outline method serves to foster semi-spontaneous participation, as the instructor encourages the student to improvise on the outline whenever possible by drawing upon all his language knowledge; in the process, the student necessarily reviews and reinforces vocabulary and grammar. The article also describes a number of practical and effective variations of the outline method. The goal is to provide the beginning student with conversational skills and the motivation to continue language study.
