Shortwave amateur radio contacts have provided an opportunity for the foreign language student to speak on a one-to-one, personalized level with other speakers of the target language, whether they be native speakers or other students. A recently designed course in conversational German via amateur radio contacts between students at Georgia Tech and the University of Louisville has been developed and implemented by the authors. This article describes the development of the course, its actual on-theair material, the language development of the students enrolled in the course, and the critique of the course by the students. In addition, projected courses are described, with an invitation for other schools to participate.
