In 1972, 1975, and 1977, Austin College in Sherman, Texas, offered a unique opportunity for German teachers of all levels to encounter German culture without leaving Texas. The teachers attended the Seminar on Contemporary Germany and enjoyed the German environment that was provided by t h e large number of German citizens attending the concurrent Seminar on Contemporary America. Academically, the seminar consisted of lectures and discussions on contemporary German culture conducted in German by Germans. In addition to these structured sessions, the teachers were encouraged to 'mix' with the Germans as much as possible; some had German roommates. This article describes the seminar as a unique approach to cultural education f o r German teachers and suggests the possible adaptation of this approach for other language and culture groups.
