Isi artikelThe importance of the popular or mass arts has grown in the past two decades to form a strong social force which has influenced many phases of our daily lives and helped to shape our values. While investigating another culture with our students in second language classes, it is logical to utilize the students’ known world as a stimulus to gain insight into various social values often taken for granted. This awareness serves as a pivotal point for the study of another culture, an unknown world for our students. Media investigated include newspapers and magazines, television, and popular songs in the student’s native language and in the target language. The appeal of the media is used to teach language skills as well as the culture component. Classroom strategies are included in this discussion.
