Isi artikelAs the founder of modern political psyhcology, Harold Lasswell, was fond of pointing out, much of what we study in the social sciences - in anthropology, psychology, sociology, politics, history, economics - deals either directly or obliquely with matters of "who gets what, when, and how" (Lasswell, 1950). By this criterion, questions having to do with the just distribution of social costs and benefits, of status and privilege, of equality and inequality and of how these are perceived by the participants in social transactions - belong near the heart of social science. Patterns of resource distribution do not simply occur in a vacuum. To have normative legitimacy within any particular social context, they must be supported by an elaborate cultural web of plausible beliefs and customs that provide justification for existing distributive arrangements (e. g. food - sharing rituals, welfare eligiblity criteria, tax codes) or attempts to alther those arrangements (e. g. social legislation, tax reform, revolution) ...
