Isi artikel
The subject of driver education has immense appeal for students and offers the foreign language teacher a wealth of instructional possibilities. Such topics as automobile nomenclature, driving regulations, and learning how to drive, when taught in the foreign language, can be used to present ( I ) vocabulary, (2) grammar, and (3) comparative cultures. Instructional materials-consisting of driving manuals, international road signs, and cars themselves-serve to introduce vocabulary and to stimulate class discussion. The article also touches upon Asher’s concept of the Total Physical Response with students responding to foreign language commands by performing actual or simulated driving tasks. Although the essential aspect oj the driving unit is to teach language and culture, a good secondary focus is to help students review for the written portion of the state driving examination.
