It is believed that question formation acquisition cannot be separated from some stages. (Dulay et al, 1982; Pienemann, Johnston, & Brindley, 1988; Spada & Lightbown, 1999) However, some researchers had different arguments over the differences of the stages of question formation. The present study investigated whether learner language follows the order of question formation acquisition developed by Pienemann & Johnston. The main participant of this study was a junior high school student. To gather the data, the researchers recorded participant’s talk for four times in a month to find the development stages in questions formation. The participant did not start with the lowest stage and follow all the stages. Otherwise, he was already in the middle stage and eventually skipped some stages. Surprisingly, he did skip some stages, yet he came back to those stages in several sessions. In addition, he was able to acquire the highest stage, the questions with fixed expression (e.g. do you think that…?). The implication for language learning is the use of fixed expression helps the learner to acquire questions in higher stages.
