Isi artikelChildren poetry as a language learning resource is rarely considered in EFL teaching and learning in Indonesia context especially to teach EFL young learners. EFL teachers do not think to make use of it. However, children poetry as an authentic material provides the power of literature which guarantees a motivating and meaningful learning for EFL young learners. The study specifically investigates EFL young learners’ preferences in order to develop the understanding of appropriate material selection. It is an exploratory study in which the teacher-researcher shared her experience working with nine sixth graders in the attempt of seeking for their responses to children poetry as a learning material in EYL program. Two techniques of data collection were employed namely video recording and in-depth interviews. The data then were coded and generated into themes. The research findings show that quality of children poetry is determining as well as the young learners’ comprehension of the poems and their interactions with them. Therefore, selectively choosing children poetry based on some criteria including language, content, length, poetic function, and active involvement is essential.
