Isi artikelOne of the language functions is a tool for humans to express their feeling either good or bad. One of the bad feelings is complaining that becomes the main study of this paper. Trosborg (1937) defines the complaint as an action that people express their negative feeling or disapproval. However, people should be polite as Brown and Levinson (1978) argue that there are two types of faces relating about politeness popularly known as Face Threatening Act. Positive face is human wants to be liked or accepted being as a member in one community where they belong to. In contras, negative face is human desired not to be imposed. That is why people need to save or protect the positive face as well as negative face in order to minimize the conflict. Thus, People should consider with whom they talk to especially in complaining towards the hearer. The aim of this study is to investigate the complaining expressions in which classified into four sub categories of complaint strategies that proposed by Trosborg. The strategies are: no explicit reproach, expression of disapproval, accusation, and blame (Trosborg, 1937). This study uses the qualitative method. The data is taken from Friends sitcom’s transcript four episodes season ten. This sitcom tells about the friendship among six characters namely Ross, Monica, Chandler, Joey, Rachel, and Phoebe.
