Writing is a very important skill that every student must have. Throughout their academic life, students will be doing a lot of writing, be it formal writing such as papers, reports, and theses, or informal writing like free writing, narrative essays, etc. Nevertheless, it is also considered one of the more difficult skills to master. There are many aspects in writing that students must pay attention to, e.g. punctuation, capitalization, grammar, unity, coherence, etc. It is not rare to find that although students are already grammatically competent, their writing may still not be very good since they do not organize their ideas well, or the sentences are not coherent because they lack transitions. Another aspect of writing that also poses a big challenge for students is collocation, or the common combination of words. This is especially true for EFL students, where they often put words together in a nonnative-like manner. In other words, they often produce collocational errors in their writing. Based on the writer’s experience teaching writing classes, the writer found that the students often have difficulty in producing proper collocations. Therefore, this paper is an attempt to find out the students’ collocational errors in their writing, more specifically lexical collocations of the verb + noun and adjective + noun types. The data for this research is taken from students’ Writing 3 Final Test from the English Language and Culture Department at Bunda Mulia University. This study also tries to explore the possible reasons for the errors through a comparison of the students’ L1. The errors are identified by referring to an online corpus as well as a collocation dictionary. The findings of the study reveal that students make lexical collocational errors because of the influence of their L1 or Indonesian language, as well as their unawareness of the precise collocates for the words.
