Having considered that Indonesia has problems in academic publications, it is very important to address what contributes this stagnancy. This paper is aimed at exploring college students’ skill to do academic writing tasks or essays. This study involves English-majoring students from three classes who attend writing III at a State Islamic Institute in Banten. The data is gathered through classroom observation and students’ writing documents/ samples taken from their semester writing assignment, and final-term writing exam. The paper highlights the degrees of students’ familiarity with the principles of academic writing and their skills to structure introductory and content/body paragraphs, as well as the compliance with unity and coherence principles in their paragraphs/essays. The results show that most fourth-semester collegers attending Writing III are not quite familiar with the organization and elements of academic writing especially the introductory and content paragraphs as well as the paragraph unity and coherence. The frequent problems that the students make in introduction is the difficulties to provide some background statements before stating their thesis statement. The problems made in content/body paragraph are even more disturbing such as ungrammatical sentences leading to misunderstanding, disharmony between topic and its supports, and violations to the unity and coherent principles.
