Isi artikelThe article examines Indonesian college students’ perception of how they understand the funny parts of English-written joke-texts. Understanding English-written jokes will be a problem for EFL learners in Indonesia. The present study attempted to assess the selfperceived level of the students’ competence at performing English skills needed to understand the jokes. It employed a qualitative research method from the phenomenological perspective. It used data obtained from 95 second-year Indonesian university students through questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. The results of the study show that the students tended to perceive the English jokes to be difficult. They lacked of linguistic knowledge, cultural literacy and general world knowledge for the humor perception. This paper concludes with the discussion of implications for the humor processing from the cognitive point of view of the students. This will benefit EFL teachers in Indonesia in guiding their students in underlining the humorous chunks of the texts they are presented with.
