Therefore, the position of English in Korea is as a foreign language and used for international communication. Despite the development of its tourism and entertainment industries, English is not spoken for daily life in Korea. Considering the language, Korean has different phonological distribution compared to English. This difference influences the way Koreans pronounce English words. When they speak English, their mother tongue affects the way to pronounce English words. To pronounce English words ending in consonants, most Koreans add vowels after them, for example the word ‘jump’. When others pronounce the word jump /d??mp/, Korean will pronounce it as /d??m.p?/. This different phonological system results in unique characteristic of Korean English. Due to the different phonological system, this sound modification occurs as an attempt to help Koreans pronounce this word. If the vowel is not added after the consonant, the sound of ‘p’ becomes silent. This phenomenon is also related to their acquisition of English and also exposure to English. Besides, this phenomenon is also the result of their Second Language Acquisition (SLA), where first language interference affects the pronunciation of English words. This paper will try to explore more and explain this phenomenon using SLA theory and also phonological theory. This paper is also expected to be a reference that this phenomena is a form of sound variation of Korean English instead of a mistake or error.
