Isi artikelSeveral studies by Indonesian scholars have discovered that Indonesian students often have difficulties in pronouncing phonemes which are not found in Indonesian sound system. Two phonemes which are particularly difficult for native Indonesian students to produce are English dental fricatives /?/ and /ð/. This study was carried out to find out how Indonesian students substitute English dental fricatives with other phonemes and why those phonemes are used. 15 English department students of Binus University who participated in this study were given two kinds of test, the first being transcription test to measure the students’ ability in recognizing the sounds and the second was pronunciation test to measure the students’ ability to produce the specific dental fricative segments. Results revealed that only 7 percent of the students can pronounce dental fricatives correctly while the rest replaced them with other phonemes which are found in Indonesian phonology.
