ABSTRACTIn advanced high school classes, the Vocabulary-in-Context and the Question-and- Answer exercises illustrated in this article are used to enhance the reading and understanding of literary texts. The Vocabulary- in-Con text exercise begins with activities in vocabulary building and comprehension and continues with an exercise on reading enrichment. The Question-and-Answer exercise enlarges the events and details presented in the Vocabulary-in-Context exercise. This enlargement is a preparation for reading and listening activities in which theme, character description, motivation, and the interpretation of events and relationships are dramatized by the teacher. In this oral presentation, he or she makes the subtle, elemental values of the story enter into the empathy and understanding of the class. The progression from the written exercises to the teacher’s oral presentation prepares the students to express themselves articulately and perceptively during an unstructured discussion of the story.
