Isi artikelThis glossary presents signs for some 150 'terms. These signs derive from the manual language used by the deaf inhabitants of a Maya Indian village in Yucatan, Mexico, and were gathered by the author in 1977. The basis for this glossary is the Swadesh 100 word list, but the terms presented here are supplemented by other terms observed in everyday use. Most signs were obtained from the hearing father of three deaf children, but some terms derive from observations of, and participation in, manual conversations with deaf villagers. Because the author has not had an opportunity to return to this village, the data collected here must be considered provisional.
