Hiding or covering the facial area, with the haflds, with an object, or in other ways, is a common kinesic pattern for Japanese women. This behavior, being a stimulus itself, can be understood as a process of kinesic substitution which is performed because of its role in impression management. Based upon detailed observation, a kinesic analysis is offered. Theoretically, the behavior is explained within the framework of kinesic adaptors and as a kind of social releasor. Empirically, Japanese and American women's perceptions of Japanese women covering their face suggest that this behavior may occur universally, while consequences and interpretations of the behavior vary by culture.
