Isi artikel
Recent developments in lexicography, analyses of discourse structure, and studies in variability have strongly suggested the need of a greater appreciation for performance, a better understanding of the nature of figurative language, and a more thorough insight into the role of extralinguistic experience in the description and explanation of linguistic phenomena. All of this would seem to imply the importance of semiotics as a systematic way of viewing language in its broader communicative function. In fact, without such a semiotic approach much that is now being done in the field of linguistics seems to be too restricted and too biased to form a valid basis for scientific explanation or evaluation.
