Isi artikel
In its search for a satisfactory framework for a set of socially deictic phenomena in Japanese which relate to the notion of "giving" in English, this paper explores current syntactic, semantic and pragmatic theories and shows the necessity for a rejection of the structuralist constraint on extralinguistic investigation. It emerges that grammatical analysis must consider the socio-psychological sphere ff it is to achieve explanatory adequacy, with the emphasis on the interconnection between society and linguistic system
