The author describes a functional approach to communication used very successfully with one global aphasic and the circumstances that led to that approach. Through the use of video tape of the subject during an occupational therapy session, the author identified the subject's spontaneous nonverbal behaviors that served as cues for the therapist and their ensuing interactions. The interactions observed on the video tape and a foUowup study led the author to conclude that much of what the global aphasic is trying to communicate may be ignored or overlooked because the message being sent is alien to our expectations.
