Isi artikelThis paper is an application of recent discourse theory to the analysis of discourse produced by individuals diagnosed to have communicative disorders. Specifics of discourse theory are discussed; namely, event and non-event structure; temporal structure; reference scope; rhetorical predicate structure (all taken from the work of Grimes and Meyer). These specifics are, then, used in the analysis of discourse of frontal lobe aphasics and a learning disabled patient. The analysis reveals similar discrepancies in the discourse of each individual: lack of control over covariance rhetorical predicates (which serve to propagate normal discourse fluently) and lack of control over scope. These f'mdings correlate with the general cognitive problems of each of the individuals producing the discourses in that the frontal lobe aphasits and the learning disabled patient in this study were diagnosed as having problems in cognitive control.
