The present study investigates the functional nature of the given/ new contract in the communication processes observed in interactions of English, American and Japanese children from the twoword stage onward. The approach follows pragmatic factors, i.e., an appropriate use of language from the standpoint of context and situation. Spec'.nl attention is paid to the use of devices of the given/new contract in discourse such as: (1) focal stiess, (2) word order, (3) pronominalization, (4) definiteness, and (5) ellipsis. Similarities and differences in the patterns of usage for the contract from an adult viewpoint are examined. Results of the anylsis axe evaluated as to how children relate various anaphoric phenomena to the given/ new contract and acquire devices which convey different pragmatic function
