Isi artikel
Although dialectology as a field far pre-dates sociolinguistics, there are a number of areas where it can benefit greatly from the adoption of certain methods and approaches developed and employed in the latter field. This article examines several of the areas where traditional work in dialectology has proved inadequate and outlines specific areas where sociolinguistics can make a substantial contribution. Topics discussed include: the bias in dialectology toward the historical; the relative lack of attention paid to the heterogeneity of the speech community and the variability of speech; and, the attempt in dialectology to account for regional variation.
