Isi artikelIn recent years, many arguments over linguistic models have foundered in the various investigators' inability to agree on the acceptability of the crucial data; one reason for this is the neglect of actual language behavior data in favor of data comprised solely of intuitions as to sentences' grammaticality. This paper will review some of the specific problems which have arisen from the neglect of actual speech events and conclude that the pitfalls of constructing theories based on investigator intuitions alone can only be avoided by a radical shift in focus toward the analysis of sufficient quantities of real speech. The felicitous results of such a shift are apparent in a study of syntactic variation across sex in Japanese. Sex is clearly a soclocultural parameter which affects both lexical choice and syntax; a study of socially situated speech, moreover, shows that sex of speaker interacts with other features of speaker identity and of the speech situation either to stimulate or to inh~it the production of certain stereotypically female/male speech forms. It is also possible to identify certain dimensions of the speech situation with which sex of speaker interacts. Finally, I will suggest a method of arriving at an appropriate set of parameters for defining context in the Japanese setting.
