Isi artikelThe concept of bilingualism has long been a focus of research in linguistics, one encompassing psychology, pedagogy and, increasingly, sociology. Research in this area has spawned a wide range of terminology which is used, like the term bilingualism itself, with varying degrees of precision. In this article the diverse characterizations as to the kinds and degrees of bilingualism found in the literature are examined with the end in view of providing a more concise and workable conceptual framework. Bilingualism as it is distinguished from bi-dialectalism, stylistic variation and diglossia is considered and the author proposes that the term "plurilingualism" be adopted as a generic term covering the cases of two or more languages, while "bilingualism" be redefined in the more restrictive sense of being a fair degree of proficency on the part of an individual using two languages, these two concepts providing the basic categories into which diglossia and stylistic/dialect variations are reintegrated.
