On the Vocabulary and Kinship Terminology of the Imperial Family of Japan

The distinctive language use of court and royal families appears, perhaps not surprisingly, to have attracted little serious linguistic attention. Even the well-known language of the Japanese Imperial Family and court has been little studied in Japan or elsewhere. The present writer knows of only Goshokotoba by Inokuchi and Horii (1974) which reports material collected at Daisho-ji-monzeki in Kyoto. It includes "Kugekotoba Sh6zon," a glossary of 372 court words compiled in 1944. The present paper is based on both this glossary, as annotated for the present writer in 1982 by Prince Mikasa, the youngest brother of the Emperor, and the interviews with him in 1973. This is the first time data have been collected directly from a prince, and their significance is increased by the tendency, as reported in this paper, for this language to fall into disuse. This paper is concerned solely with vocabulary. After tracing the origins of certain word groups and indicating their characteristic features, it concentrates on kinship terminology, giving comprehensive lists and analyzing the use of the terms. Its main function is documentary in that it seeks to preserve some distinctive features of a virtually unique variety of language, rather than to relate the features of that variety to wider theoretical issues.
