The Child's Acquisition of Sound Patterns: Can It Really be Studied as Child Phonology?

Child language has been the focus of linguistic and psycholinguistic investigations for more than two decades now, although serious study of child language had been conducted for many years by nonlinguists prior to the sudden increase of interest in child language over the past two decades. In this article I address myself to the issue of whether or not the child's acquisition of sound patterns can really be studied as child phonology. The reason for raising this issue is in part because the notion of child phonology has been called into question by many practitioners in the field of child language, the reviewer of a recent book entitled Child Phonology among them, and partly because there is a real need to reconsider what role linguistics plays, not merely by treating child language as a sheer convenience that subserves and facilitates linguists' theorizing about what language should and should not be, but rather regarding it as a challenge for what they do not know from which they can benefit in their conception of language. In so doing, comments and criticisms are made with respect to Jakobson's laws of irrevers~le solidarity, among others in the literature. Support and empirical evidence are drawn from concrete counter examples and experimental documentary videotapes. A suggestion for a new direction to search for a more appropriate approach is then proposed, which is followed by a conclusion, after some elaboration on the suggestion. The conclusion offers to predict the "past," as it were, from what has been neglected in the study of the child's acquisition of sound patterns, ff the suggestion is followed, by working "backward" in the descending order of several age brackets set up in the pursuit.
