Native Japanese speakers were measured their reaction times when judging whether the words "right," "left," "up," and "down," written either in Kanfi, Hiragana, Katakana, English, or pictographs, appeared in semantically congruent locations or not (e.g., the word "right" appeared at the right side of the visual field). It was found that the reaction times Kan]i, Hiragana, and pietographs which appeared in semantically congruent locations, were faster than the reaction times to those which appeared in semantically incongruent locations (e.g., the word "right" appeared at the left side of the visual field). However, the reaction times to the words written in Katakana and English did not show such Stroop effects. These results suggest the possibility that the five types of symbols may each require its own processing system.
