Disorders of communication in signers following cerebral damage are reviewed. It is shown that sign aphasia, like oral and written language aphasia, most of the time results from a lesion in the left hemisphere. The semeiology of sign language is found in many respects to run parallel with that of oral and written language aphasia. There are also differences, but due to the limited number of observations it is not yet clear whether these differences are idiosyncratic or on the contrary should be considered typical of aphasia in brain damaged signers
