Russian locus expressions involving the instrumental case with the prepositions pered, had, pod, za, and mezdu and the accusative case with the prepositions pod and za are subjected to componentlal analysis. On the basis of morphemic and syntactic patterning, it is shown that each preposition-case combination communicates a grouping of secondary deep cases or sememic role relations. For example, pod + instr, which is translated variously as 'under, below, at the base of, beneath,' etc., realizes the sememic roles LOCUS and PATH and INFERIOR. That is, pod + instr defines a LOCUS which is on a PATH extending from the INFERIOR side of its object. I present a general statement of the groupings of roles possible and a computerlike algorithm which predicts the prepositions and cases that realize the roles. The study concludes with a fully formalized stratificational network which makes the interrelations between the role combinations, their morphemic realizations, and the syntactic structures explicit.
