Isi artikel
The present study was designed to investigate the hypothesis of divergent processing between language that is read and language that is heard. Fifteen readers and fifteen listeners in third-, sixth-, and ninth-grades were asked to read or listen to sentence pairs and, then, to process relational meaning by selecting the most appropriate cohesive tie from among four choices. Divergence between reading and listening performances appeared with the most experienced readers in the study. A trend also appeared with the least experienced readers. The results cast doubt on the belief that the ability to decode causes convergent processing between language that is read and language that is heard. Listening superiority did not appear at any age/grade level. Age-related differences were found for the comprehension of relational meaning.
