The similarities which have been cited as evidence of genetic relationship between Quechua and Aymara do not extend to all varieties of Quechua - nor to two languages closely related to Aymara. Proto-Quechua and Proto-Jaqi (the immediate ancestor of Aymara) are much more divergent than their commonly compared descendants. This, together with geographical proximity and the ease with which Quechua accepts foreign words, suggests that the similarities in question are due to loans. A comparison of minor morpheme systems - utterly different - confirms this. The recognition of the vast scope of Quechua [ Aymara borrowing opens the door to a reconstruction of Andean cultural prehistory through the study of linguistic contacts.
