The present work treats two different aspects regarding research on the Kunza language: (1) A chronological outlook, with comments on the strength of the positions of various investigators, with respect to the relationship of this American Indian language. Also considered is the newer research concerning the matter of adstratum (Kunza and Quechua) and its significance for rejecting certain hypotheses regarding relationships that have long been held. Some evaluations are discussed, too, regarding the degree of dispersion of this language geographically, concerns which continue to provoke controversy that has not been resolved because of lack of studies of toponymy. (2) A systematized description of the vowels of Kunza is presented, based on fragmentary information put forth by various investigators. This new contribution to our knowledge of this language reafftrms its status of "linguistic isolate," distinct, and without affiliation with neighboring languages such as Quechua, Aymara, and Diaguita (Kak~ln).
