This paper compares the use of honorific pronouns and salutations displayed by the minority Thai-speaking Muslims in the areas where Thai Buddhists are the majority population, Because of different socialization experiences Thai Muslim discourse strategies and social interactions appear to reflect different conceptions of hierarchical social relations in Thai society than do those of Thai Buddhists. An Islamic egalitarian ethos paralleling modernization values has led to these variant discourse strategies. Hence, Thai hegemonic cultural practices are interpreted and accepted differently by this Muslim minority, affecting the symbolic relationship between this minority and the Thai state.
