Isi artikel
This paper analyzes controlling speech acts at a series of United Methodist Church business meetings in the midwestern United States. Specifically, it compares how speakers in the roles of minister, chair and ordinary group member encode directives and disagreements as the group tries to achieve consensus on programming and administrative issues. The comparison suggests that linguistic choices are roledependent, however, all speakers work dynamically to fulfill the demands of their role. Ministers, who have more institutional status than other speakers must, nevertheless, work to obtain the willing support of their parishioners. They use an effective combination of assertive and non-assertive control acts, simultaneously negotiating both power and accommodation.
