Isi artikel
This paper studies the English demonstratives. rhis (rhese) and rhar (those). It shows that all the uses of these demonstra6ves that previous writers have noted, such as denoting the spatial and temporal relationship to the speaker, referring anaphorically and cataphorically in discourse, expressing the speaker’s emotion, and indicating the focus of attention, can be accounted for as a case of semantic expansion. This seeming versatility of the demonstratives is in fact a result of the interplay of the semantics of these demonstratives and the linguistic environments in which they are used.
