The position that philosophy of science provides a valuable ‘template for understanding the science in all areas with a common interest in applied linguistics is presented. Philosophy of science provides a standard for evaluating the present status of a field and can be used as a guide for determining future directions in research. Philosophy of science topics that have relevance to researchers in applied linguistic fields are presented. Specific examples of how these topics can provide valuable insight into issues in these fields are given. The examples are drawn primarily from the literature on disordered language.
