Self justi~cation and denial of res~nsibil~ty as adaptive techniques in sustaining positive self image and denying negative interpretations assigned to a particular behaviour represent a particular type of verbal behavioral response or reaction to threat to self esteem. With the aid of natural language samples. this preliminary investigation discusses the devices used by putative offenders in selfjustification and denial of responsibility, the language use vis-d-vis ordinary use of language. and tries to relate the hierarchical structural organization observed to Bowerman’s (1978) social psychological theory of ‘Subjective Competence’.
