Isi artikel
This is an interim report of a study of the gradual loss in the United States of Japanese as a second language by four American children. Within this particular attrition context the paper discusses the significance of age and original level or proficiency as factors in language loss. The language collected from the four children includes spontaneous conversation, four oral elicitation tasks, two aural comprehension tests and one writing task. These longitudinal data support the hypotheses that “older is better” for maintaining second language skills, and that “the more you know, the less you lose.”
