Isi artikelIn this paper I highlight the importance of the concept ‘sociolinguistic area’ and suggest that a sociolinguistic approach to linguistic phenomena, for example. echo formation, can contribute to our understanding of South Asia as a sociolinguistic area. I examine published data on echo words in 15 South Asian languages and argue that not only is there a similarity in the way in which echo words are constructed across language families, there is also a consensus of attitudes towards the use of ethos and a widespread ‘need’ to use them. This suggests that echo words are not a purely linguistic phenomenon but are sociolinguistic in that their use is governed by sociolinguistic factors like speaker attitudes and needs. Echo words, therefore, can be seen as crucial to South Asian ‘ways of speaking’ (Hymes 1974) and may be taken as markers of the South Asian sociolinguistic area.
