This paper studies a group of logical connectors in English. It demonstrates that because of their meanings, these logical connectors signal the grounding of the clauses they introduce. Unlike other linguistic means of grounding, such as tense, aspect, mood, voice and verbal categories, however, logical connectors perform their grounding tasks in absolute terms. These two features of the logical connectors are seen as a result of the relative importance of different discourse units as perceived by human cognition.
