Dissatisfaction with inadequate phonetic accounts of the sound change s > h in Spanish has favored alternative, formal approaches which account for the phenomenon by reference to higherorder mechanisms of language internal representation and management. A critique of the basic principles of a current grammar-based model, autosegmentalism, as they apply to this problem asserts that such formalisms do not accurately reflect the coordination of articulatory gestures that occur in VsC sequences. A reexamination of the physical principles associated with s-aspiration underscores the interdependence of articulators in producing a complex acoustic signal with significant informational overlap. Perceptual experiments support the claim that misparsing of cues relevant to /s/ during auditory processing may explain the development of the aspirate [h].
