This work concerns thematic structure of the clause complex. It points out some deficiencies associated with already proposed criteria for the identification of theme and rheme in discourse. It suggests a definition of thematic structure depending on the illocutionary aim of the parts of any utterance, conceived as a message. Consequently, it proposes a test based on the projection of the utterance by means of a challenging predicate, whose main advantage is to check the thematic structure of the utterance without removing it from its actual context. The application limits of such a test to particular syntactic constructions are explored. An example is given of a procedural application of the test to clause complexes in English written texts.
